History at The Crescent Primary school

History Curriculum Statement

History at The Crescent Primary School is taught through an engaging, enquiry-based curriculum which develops pupils’ knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. Each history unit is centred around a key enquiry question and follows Hampshire’s six-step enquiry approach, encouraging children to investigate, question, analyse evidence and draw informed conclusions. Pupils develop their chronological understanding alongside key historical concepts including continuity and change, cause and consequence, similarity and difference, and significance. Learning is enriched through a range of primary and secondary sources, artefacts, educational visits, visitors and practical experiences. Through carefully sequenced learning, children make connections between local, British and world history, building the knowledge, vocabulary and historical skills needed to become curious, thoughtful and increasingly independent historians.

History Equality Statement

In History, we promote the principles of the Equality Act 2010 through an inclusive curriculum which represents a diverse range of people, cultures, societies and experiences from the past. Pupils encounter different voices and perspectives and are encouraged to recognise that history is made up of varied experiences and interpretations. Diverse representation is embedded meaningfully throughout our curriculum, including within local, British and world history, rather than being taught as an isolated element. We carefully select historical sources, images, texts and resources that challenge stereotypes, misconceptions and unconscious bias while providing positive and respectful representations of groups that may have historically been marginalised or under-represented. All pupils, regardless of gender, ethnicity, religion, disability, background or ability, are supported to access an ambitious History curriculum which promotes equality, diversity, respect and a strong sense of belonging.
